![]() Dark Side is awesome for about 40 minutes, but it also contains one of the worst filler tracks on any Floyd album ever: "On the Run". I also love Echoes, but I don't think those can be compared as they are quite different musically.Īnd btw, in one aspect, I actually find AHM superior to Dark Side of the Moon: there is simply not a single bad track on it. ![]() I get that some rock fans might find the inclusion of an orchestra on a rock album a bit awkward, but I don't mind as long as it provides a great listening experience, and I find the AHM suite very pleasant to listen to. But aside from that, I don't think they're too similar, and one of them can't displace the other. I get where you're coming from when you're comparing the AHM suite with Echoes, as they are both very long pieces, taking up a whole LP side each. Sure, Meddle is a great album and I love it, but apart from Echoes, I don't think the other songs are as great as those on Atom Heart Mother. Obviously, the "Big 4" albums are awesome, but if you dig past those, I think Atom Heart Mother is a pretty strong contender. I guess that by the "Big 4", you mean Dark Side, WYWH, Animals and The Wall? (Interestingly, there was also a 1971 EP called "Big 4" released only in Japan, which actually consisted of some rather obscure tracks, but I obviously understand that you were not thinking of that one, but it's an interesting digression nonetheless, as a side note). Unfortunately he never played it any more after 1987, which I think is a shame as I really love that song. Regarding live performances, you're not entirely right - Roger also used to play "If" on all his shows in the 1980s. Personally I absolutely love it, but it’s hard to hold a candle to the string of records to come. I don’t know, I wouldn’t say that it’s explicitly disliked, but Floyd had such a large catalog of amazing records and I think Atom Heart Mother can easily slink back into the shadows behind a slew of other kick ass albums. The other songs on AHM are awesome, but you can find a lot of similar sounding material on Meddle/OBC. Even if you look past the big 4 into Meddle- general consensus on Echoes is it’s the AHM Suite but tighter, better sounding, better arrangements, and more directional. It seems to be commonly liked by those familiar with it, but overshadowed by the big 4. None of the songs really get radio play, streams, or live renditions. Considering that, I think you have to be a fairly serious Floyd fan to dig past the big 4 and dive into AHM. With the exception of the smaller Nick Mason Saucerful shows, I believe Dave is the only one who performed any Atom Heart Mother songs (Fat Old Sun and that’s the only one?) live.
